A Wonderful, gritty, heart warming book.
Lutie and Fate escape Spearfish, SD after their father's guardian, Floy, drops dead at the local Wal-Mart. Both travel to Las Vegas in an attempt to locate their father (who's last letter to them was postmarked there). When they get there, they find out terrible news about their father. Lutie and Fate have to stay strong as they live on the streets. Fate finds odd jobs to make money but Lutie finds work at a local motel and Denny's. But the money they make can't get them into an apartment. Throughout their story, they have a "guardian angel" that leaves them notes and gifts on their car while in Las Vegas. After a horrible incident, he decides to make himself known to Lutie and Fate and take them to his home in Hugo, OK. What remains is a heartwarming tale.
**
Beware: Some of the incidents in Las Vegas are horrible and can be offensive to some readers. I, myself, found that they added to the story and depth of the characters.
