This mystery takes place on a luxurious cruise-ship called the Gloriana. Paula Glenning is a character who gets mixed up in the whole thing. She is a writer who is staying on the ship. Denis is a minor character in the story who is a night steward for Paula and also a bit of a gossip. Paulas next door neighbors are Josephine and Louis Hillman. He is a writer who has made it big writing do-overs of old stories, and she is his publisher. He wants to write seriously, while she wants him to stay with the tried and true. They have an argument over this, which Paula overhears from her cabin.
Paula gets to know both of them, and has meetings with Louis. You arent sure if she is falling for him or not. When Josephine is found dead in her bathroom, there are three suspects. Louis, her estranged son, (who just showed up on the ship) and Veronica, who is one of the nurses on board, with whom Louis has had an affair.
When the cruise is over and Paula returns home, a letter from Louis arrives and everything is cleared up. There was no excitement to this story at all and I was rather bored throughout. I kept reading it thinking it would pick up at some point, but it never did.
