Bounty Hunter Alice Vega has been hired to help find Kylie and Bailey Brandt who disappeared from a K-Mart parking lot while their mother was inside shopping. Security cameras show the girls getting out of the car and eventually walking out of camera range as Kylie waves at someone she seems to know. Since Vega is getting no cooperation with the police, she hires local private investigator Max Caplan, hoping he can run interference with the cops. With little to work with, Vega and Cap interview witnesses and sort through the various lies told by the suspects.

This is the first book in the Alice Vega series. I liked Cap and Vega, both individually and as partners working the case. I thought the author was laying the foundation for a romance between them, but it never happened. (Maybe in a later book.) The mystery is solid with lots of twists and turns. I couldn't figure out who took the girls and was surprised when the kidnapper's identity was uncovered.

The story moved quickly and kept me riveted, but I felt like the characters would sometimes jump into the middle of the action without thinking or calling for backup one too many times. My rating: 4 Stars.
