I truly enjoy books that educate as well as entertain. This one was one of them as the mystery demonstrates how two different cultures interact - sometimes well and other times poorly. Emily Tempest is hired as Aboriginal Community Police officer to aid the local police in dealing with her people and the whites who dominate the environment. The trouble is that Emily becomes deeply involved in the murder of a geologist for whom one of her people is arrested. She understands how to determine the truth from other Aboriginals but continually gets herself into trouble with her uptight, by-the-book supervisor and those she investigates. Who really killed Doc and why? These questions continually plague Emily as she searches for clues to provide the answers. She is beaten, raped and ridiculed. As she struggles with her emotions, she continues to help Danny, an Aboriginal boy who needs someone to help him deal with his teenage angst, growing up and the white community. In the meantime she finds some time to spend with her boyfriend who loves and cherishes her for whom she is. A fine read.
