Ford County was the September 2017 pick in my online book club, The Reading Cove.

Comprised of seven 50/60-page short stories set in Ford County, Mississippi, I found it to be a pretty quick read that, for the most part, seemed to explore fantasy-type scenarios: Fish Files, Casino, Michael's Room and Quiet Haven, 4/7, all sort of felt like "wet dream" plots.

While I found them all engaging, I was disappointed in some of the endings. A few wrapped up in pretty lackluster and anticlimactic ways. And I did think the first one, Blood Drive, was beyond dull, the characters very stereotypically (and annoyingly) Mississippian.

My favorites were Michael's Room (despite the lackluster ending) and Quiet Haven, which really left me chuckling.

I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this compilation, since its stories are mostly shallow plot jaunts and don't really explore themes in any insightful or meaningful way; but I do think it's worth a read for the entertainment value. B-.
