In the title story, a farmers wife is dying. He shouldnt have married her, but he kept his bargain. Now he longs to be free, but not this way. He is torn between the loyalties of their marriage and his desire to be free. Unfortunately, only death can bring a resolution. Most of the stories in this selection are depressing, to say the least. Most seemed to be unduly lengthy as well. Overall I did not find this to be an enjoyable book.
