This isn't a bad book, but I didn't find myself enjoying it very much. It's slow to start, the bad guys are incredibly trite (kittens in glue? Really?), and excepting Mr. Fogarty, the characters feel as flat as cardboard cut-outs. What little character development there is comes out of the blue. The whole thing is very formulaic despite the author's attempts to add some twists through political intrigue, and while I found the portal technology interesting, that wasn't enough to salvage the book.

It's a book written for kids, and while it's fine for someone between 10-14 years old, it just doesn't have the depth to entertain older readers. Definitely not the next Harry Potter.
