This is the second book in Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries series. It is quite enjoyable and offers more clues into the growing friendship between midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. In this story in particular, we learn more about Frank's relationship with his son, Brian, and what is actually wrong with Brian. We even get to see a very feisty side to Sarah's elderly neighbor Mrs. Elsworth at one point in the book (when you get there, you'll know what I'm talking about & you'll enjoy it)!

As for the murder mystery in this story, Sarah goes to check on one of her patients, only to find out that the woman's sister has been murdered. This results in the patient giving birth a bit earlier than expected. Sarah feels she must find out who killed Gerta in order to ease the mind of the burdened sister. Sarah feels even more dedicated to this case once she and Malloy figure out that a number of other "Charity Girls" have been beaten to death the same way, suspecting there might be a serial killer. This story really give the reader an in depth look into the lives of "Charity Girls," life in the tenements, and even a glimpse at the wonder of Coney Island as an escape from the City. Although you can figure out "whodunit" pretty early on, it is still an enjoyable read!
