I chose this as the February 2014 pick in my neighborhood book club. I had read and enjoyed most of Sidney Poitier's non-fiction books, so when I discovered he'd written a novel, I was very eager to check it out.

Alas. It pains me to say that I was very disappointed in this book. The story just did not live up to its potential. at. all.

MONTARO CAINE could easily be re-titled MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. The narrative managed to take a dynamite premise such as the mystery behind two newborn babies born holding tiny coins in their hands, and turn it into a hollow mish-mash of character bloat, mysterious innuendo, and heavy-handed metaphysical philosophy.

It could be interpreted symbolically or literally, but either way, it seemed confused about how to tell itself.

Where was the editor? Definitely out to lunch on this one. And probably just afraid to edit an elderly Hollywood legend who's much better suited to writing non-fiction.

I'm sorry to say it, but this book was so unsatisfying that I could not recommend it to anyone; not even to those who enjoy metaphysical stories. C-
