Miss Lucy Bowes doesn't believe she's attractive, but she is intelligent and strong willed. She is staying with her best friend Caroline when she meets Captain Ewan Sandeford. Sandeford considers her as someone who can challenge him, at chess or in adventure. There's a mystery they have to solve together. That's the plot; the attraction is the numerous battles of wits between Lucy and Ewan, expressed in complex, carefully done conversations. The author's style reminds me of Patricia Veryan in this respect.
It's a good read - but read Caroline's story first - The Unexpected Sister - and the plot and background will make more sense.
