This was a very frustrating read for me. There were parts I liked alot, but the execution overall was not well done. I was anxious to find how it all played out when the first one ended with much potential for so many possibilities and I expected more. The historian's contemplations of all the "What ifs?" over and over grew extremely repetitious and just served to make the book longer. They always seemed to expect gloom and doom and jump to the worst possible conclusions often unfounded in my opinion. I enjoyed the characters of Alf and Binnie throughout. And I liked the way things played out for the most part, however it seemed to hint at a few conclusions the reader should grasp at the end that were not made clear and I can't say I got it. It left me trying to fill in the blanks and while it seemed set up to play out beautifully, I was let down in the end. I found it to be an unsatisfying long journey, but I did feel I had gained a better perspective and greater knowledge of World War II. I just do not care for this author's writing style and execution.
