She claims (in other books) that Virgin River really exists only in her heart, but you can identify the area as southeastern Humboldt/southwestern Trinity countys in northern California, in the upper reaches of the Mad, Van Duzen, and Trinity Rivers, which used to be ranch country when I lived there. Now, there's a lot of marajuana farmers, which I haven't run across in any of the books.
