A light fantasy that is ALMOST appropriate for young readers (some kissing w/ thigh touching... you decide) and thoughtful/romantic enough for adults -- I loved this book. It has echoes of Russian geography and history, but is set in its own unique world, a country bisected by the monster-ridden Shadow Fold. At the same time, it has echoes of Harry Potter with its lead character, Alina Starkov, learning to own her power as a Grisha (a witch - but don't call them that!)

The themes of trusting yourself and owning your power were so strong and compelling that I was actually not very interested the romantic subplots.
