Four stars for the concept alone - an infinity of earths humans can reach just by "stepping". In fact, the entire book works best as a concept: What life is on the other earths? Why are they all there? Where do they end? I especially enjoyed the many variations on evolution, and speculation on how the other earths may have influenced ours in the past.
That said, don't come to this book expecting much of a plot. Basically, the main characters go in search of answers to these questions, in the process coming across intelligent species and unexplained mysteries. There are ancillary characters, and other plotlines, but read this book for the ideas and possibilities it contains rather than the story. Definitely intriguing, but not my favorite Pratchett.
