Book Review of I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist

I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist

I believe in God the Father, Creator of the heavens and the earth. I believe that He created Adam and Eve perfect without sin. I believe that they yielded to temptation, sinned, and brought separation from God. I believe God sent His Son, Jesus the Christ, to die for our sins so that we can be reconciled to God. I believe that Jesus rose again on the third day, was seen by and ministered to many, ascended to heaven, and is now seated on the right hand of God the Father in heaven. I believe that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be our comforter and teacher. The Bible says it. God drew me to the Gospel. I believe it...by FAITH.

I have never felt the need to know all the arguments to prove it to be true. It simply is true. I realize, though, that the ability to understand and share the whys is growing increasingly important. One of the things that I realize my children will need is apologetics. They need to know the why behind what they believe. My oldest son is questioning many things he's been taught. He thinks I believe just because a preacher told me. I haven't known how to respond. I know that I'm reading my Bible and that the Holy Spirit teaches me... but how do I explain it if I don't really understand how I can know without a shadow of a doubt? This book addresses the doubts of the believer as well as addresses the skepticism of the non-believer.

I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist is 311 pages of the whys plus notes, index and scripture index, bringing total pages to 447. The size alone is a bit intimidating. The subject is bit intimidating- but the writing? While clearly written for high school to adult readers, it is indeed clearly written. I find the style of writing to be friendly, making a complex subject easier to understand. It doesn't read like a textbook. Major religious world views are explained. Logical analysis of various beliefs and how to refute errors in belief are included. Each section has an outline of the entire book with the bold print and an arrow to let you know what will be covered in that section. That's a great quick reference to find what you're looking for if you're using the book topically. It also shows you just where the book is going. I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist is not a quick read. It's just too complex a subject.
