This novella is the best of Barbara Metzger, but the reader will think the book has gone to the dogs. Bulldogs, hounds and setters race around Primrose Cottage, much to the distress of Viscount Corin Knowlton.
Aunt Sophie has died (she had the lifetime use of the Primrose Cottage from the Knowlton family) and she willed the continued use of the cottage for her forlorn dog strays. Aunt Sophie also willed enough money for her companion to stay on as guardian of the unwanted pups.
Corin needs the cottage to hide a spy for debriefings with British government officials. However, he has no luck at all getting Miss Angelina Armstead and her hapless hounds to move. All of this leads to intrigue and hilarity. Light, but delightful, reading.
