This is the second retelling of a fairy tale that I read from Cameron Dokey. The first was Cinderella, I do believe.
I actually loved the retelling, as it gave different motives behind Rapunzel. Grimm Fairy tales are often bloody and terrbile, hence they term grim became a common word to mean dark and deadly etc. I found this to be a lighter and happier retelling of the story. The witch wasnt evil, no one is tortured or blinded, or maimed. Babies are not stolen or bargained away, but loved.
I found the message of love, and unlocking your own self form a tower to be eternal. I did feel that all the way through the book we were getting some deep message about life, love, the human heart, and the universe and that got old.
I do have to admit, I did not know or remember that Rapunzel is a garden herb, which is how she gets her name.
