Amy O.'s review has the details and I add only two points: first, I recommend reading the series in sequence because the Prefaces in the later books are inaccurate to give you the whole story to date; and second, because the series is the story of a community that grows from about 580 to 9,000 in about nine months, there are a double-handful of named characters with speaking roles being added at each drop of more would-be colonists such that, at times, it helps to keep a crib-sheet of Who's Who; additionally, some characters change names from one book to the next and a crib-sheet may help prevent confusion and help suspend disbelief. On the whole, this is a good series that seeks to demonstrate the ability of people to overcome adversity in the face of alien invasion so that the occurrence of the Apocalypse does not necessarily have to mean the end of human civilization. McCaffrey is a knowledgeable, experienced writer with a good sense of developing her story.
