Not my favorite Lz Carlyle book. Too much exposition about the St. James society (Fraternitas Aureae Crucis) plus a kind of weak mystery with little forward progress until the last two chapters where all was neatly wrapped up. The half Indian Adrian Ruthveyn and his sister Anisha were well drawn and interesting, as well as their friend Rance. In fact there were so many interesting characters on the side, it was a real disappointment to see Carlyle chose the least interesting of them for the text book in the series.
It was just difficult to get into the main characters, so many side plots, mostly unresolved, and a lot of secondary and tertiary characters. the book wound up being One Touch of Boring. All in all not a waste of time, but not her best work.
