I'm amazed how much of the speeches they got down (reporters took it down in shorthand, I guess if they made mistakes we'd never know). Those were the good old days, when they were not hurried in their speaking (the debates seem to be 4 hours long, 2 for each?) If you read Stephen Douglas's speeches, you'd consider Lincoln an opportunistic rapscallion.
