Thoroughly absorbing for anyone in love with beautiful European locales and restoring romantic old houses and gardens. Occasionally Mayes lets her own sense of romance run away with her resulting in an overblown turn of phrase or a self-consciously twee sentence, but given her surrounding we forgive this as understandable.
