This book was definitely different! It could fit into the post-apocalyptic genre as it takes place in a US that has been consumed by drought, but the writing is elegant and literary. The prose has a dream-like quality, and the story keeps getting stranger and stranger.

After reading about a third of the book, I thought about giving up on it because it didn't seem to be doing much for me. Then something happened (no spoilers!) that I had an emotional reaction to, and I realized that I had come to care and feel engaged with a couple of the characters. So I did finish the book. It was an experience.
