It takes a true creative spirit who does their research to write one like this. The characters were easy to envision and become familiar with. The places they visited came to life in a way many books miss. I learned so much about the true Vlad Dracula of history, his life, his rule, his cruelty and of the many Eastern European superstitions and beliefs that arose from this period not to mention the clear descriptions of the Ottoman and Christian/European struggles, battles and dealings with each other. Don't mistake, this as a heavy book and you must get used to quick changes in narrator but Kostova somehow makes the learning inadvertent, enjoyable and sincerely pertinent to the plot.
