I read this book at the request of one of my students - she "absolutely loved" it and just knew that I would like it, too. Since the movie was soon coming out, I was well aware of all the hype and hysteria and had mentioned repeatedly in class that I didn't get it. My student was dead convinced that once I read it, I would get it all and join the masses. She brought it to me one Friday after school and I read it over the weekend.
I can't say that I loved it. I can't say that I hated it. I can admit that it was engrossing to read - at times, one of those "train wrecks" from which you just can't look away. The plot of the book is known to everyone by now - and it's a decent enough plot. Bella is a fish-out-of-water in high school, in a new town, and then in a relationship with a vampire and his extended family. It's certainly not the worst thing I've ever read, and I did in fact recommend it to a friend and to my sister, both of whom were going on long trips and wanted something to read during travel.
However, there are many, many flaws in the book. The dialogue at times is painfully bad, the descriptions of the perfection of the vampires become laughably trite and the overall story arc is weak to say the least. Don't go into this expecting to read the next "Interview With a Vampire" or anything on that plane - it just ain't it. Most likely, if you choose to read this, you will be entertained and you will roll your eyes from time to time.
PS - I did read all the other 3 books in the series - in my opinion, they get progressively worse and this is the best of the bunch.
