This is one of the best books in this series. It deals with the war (WWI), the sons who went away to fight, and the women (families) left behind in waiting. It's more of a Canadian point of view on the war and their involvement in it for 4 years ... which is different than the US entering toward the end of the war. It covers a war-baby, as well as a war-bride. This book in the series develops the character Rilla (named after Anne's adopted mother). She's Anne and Gilbert's youngest child (the baby), but here character matures beautifully from age 15-19, during the war years. The ending is extremely touching when the boys return home.
