Detailed, gripping account of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and how the Khmer Rouge affected a girl growing up there. Athy was a bright, well-loved child of a successful middle class family in Phnom Penh when the Vietnam war spilled over the borders into Cambodia bringing rise to the Khmer Rouge. In the days and years that followed, Athy's parents, several sisters and brothers, as well as extended family members, die. Athy suffers from starvation and sickness. This is a story that will bring you to tears. In the end there is hope as Athy and some of her remaining family members are on their way to begin a new life in the United States. However, the horrors they faced can not be erased.
