Ken Ilgunas is a very skilled writer. He wrote this auto-biography about his life from high school through graduate school with beautiful descriptions of nature, detailed descriptions of people he met along the way and personal opinions of what is happening to America today.

Had I read this book as a young single person, I probably would have thought he was genius. His anger towards the American mentality of taking on debt to go to college and then be a slave to your debt and build on it to buy a car, a house and other "things" is understandable.

However, reading this book while I have 3 kids growing quickly and soon to be in college in a blink of an eye, his opinions seem a bit cockeyed. When writing this book, his idea of freedom is to be tied to no one or no thing. As a family person, this was like reading science fiction.

And yet, it is a very good book. His journey is very impressive and his travels around the country are definitely something the majority of us will only read about. There is an inner drive he possess that is enviable and has your rooting for him the entire book.
