This book creates out of a single incident--the decision to prosecute a mother for nude photographs she took of her daughter, meant for private family use--a study of American political and judicial culture. It is excellent in so many ways: well-written, clear-eyed, suspenseful. This reader was struck by the way in which a relatively strong family in a supportive small educated community was weakened overnight by an overzealous culture of policing. And the policing is of exactly the wrong things: our country should be focused on helping the children who really do need help.
Recommended for anyone who wants a top-notch book of in-depth reportage.
