After the two powerful stories (THE WORK OF ART and GENTLEMAN JIM, see below), this story lacks the snap and thrill of the previous stories. It takes up with the children of the story in GENTLEMAN JIM. There's a hidden romance between the daughter of Sir Frederick Burton-Smythe and the son of Meg and John Beresford (Lord and Lady Allendale). The parents are sworn enemies.
Despite the long-standing feud between the two families, Ivo Beresford's pursuit of Meg Burton-Smythe is a bold move that raises questions. At twenty-three, Ivo's decision to challenge their history is daring, especially considering Meg's age of eighteen. Their youth and inexperience lead to numerous missteps, adding a layer of realism to the story. While not the strongest in the series, this book offers a unique exploration of character development.
