I am a great admirer of Jack McDevitt, even though his books are hit and miss for me (hits: the Benedict & Kolpath series; Infinity Beach; Ancient Shores; misses: the Hutch books). This one is more of a miss than a hit, and I dunno why. All the elements I like in McDevitt are there: credible characters (including women), logical thinking, flowing prose style. However I had trouble finishing it; for whatever reason it did not hold my interest consistently - whereas I couldn't put Echo down. That said, he's still a better sf writer than 99% of the people writing today. I would give it a guarded recommendation.
