My usual book preference is nothing like this, but I found it facinating. What impressed me that it was believable, since the author made no effort to portray himself as a hero, or glorify his role in the war effort. I was very impressed with his recall of names, places and dates of things that took place so many years ago. I have since become more interested in the period, and have seen several actions mentioned in other historical productions of the war that make mention of things that were mentioned in the book. I have given copies to my two teenage grandsons that are very interested in this part of history, as well as to several friends as gifts. Knowing that someone lived through these actions and horrors makes it so much more real to me. I am really glad that I read it....pure fact, no Hollywood hype and gory details!
