It sounds like a good idea for a YA book, but it's not well executed. Starts off slow and then goes off the rails in the last third. The main character is likable enough but we don't get much personality, and the others are mostly blanks. The biggest problem I have with it is that the main plot point - the Shifting - is barely used. Scott gets to shift a few times to keep himself from falling (as he does the first time he uses it) but other than that, no big events are affected by his ability. He's supposed to be very powerful and has other abilities, but we really only see that at one other spot. The villain Benjo is out of place. It's as if the author wanted to write a government conspiracy book but had this great idea for a pyscho gross serial killer too, and couldn't let it go. I see this is the first in a series but I wouldn't read more.
