Robert Morgan is a great storyteller capturing the life in the Applachia Mountains. His writing moves in the way memory moves, weaving a sense of history. The characters show extraordinary courage seen in ordinary life. Troy, the son in the Powell family faces the beginning days of World War II and serving for his country. As the family and friends experience his absence, Morgan shares the characters, moving them along in daily life. One of the great reads I have experienced.
