This book starts out with the Harte's heading to Texas after the Civil War. Courtney's father is a doctor and he wants to set up shop in Waco, Texas. Along the way, their wagon is attacked by a band of Comanches, who kill the men. Courtney and her stepmother are saved by a blue-eyed Indian.

Years later, Courtney sees a newspaper with a photograph of a man she is sure is her father -- living in Waco. She decides to hire someone to take her through Indian Territory to get to her father. She chooses Chandos, a gunslinger of few words.

There's lots of action and drama along the trip. There's great dialogue between the characters -- Courtney learns to be more bold as she travels beside Chandos. However, Chandos is the strong, silent type. Chandos' story isn't revealed until the last 50 pages or so.
