This is an amazing book and I am so sad to hear that (as of now) the publishers do not plan to print the planned sequels! It's steampunk at its best, a feisty female lead has a gift that cancels magic, so of course, she doesn't believe in magic.

But she "investigates" what she calls magic "charades" (she just hasn't quite realized that once she comes in contact with the situations, the facts change.)She makes her living resolving problems and the situations are very clever and even funny, but also a bit of a risk to her, so occasionally it is a little scary. She has a vampire "upper crust" guy who likes her and keeps showing up, but it's not a squeamy romance, just the right amount!

I read it right through to the end, did not want to put it down. It is actually two stories in one novel, only available in paperback unfortunately.

Itis set in an alternate reality where the United States lost the war and remains a colony of Great Britain.
