A yound husband and wife on summer vacation from their teaching positions set sail from Washington state with their brother-in-law on his beautiful, handcrafted sailboat. A devout Seventh Day Adventist, the brother-in-law is bound for South America to begin missionaly work, with his family to follow later. During a terrible storm off the coast of California, they are not only blown far out to sea, but the boat capsizes. All three survive the accident and manage to access a large air pocket in the upside-down craft. Their ordeal lasted over 40 days with minimal food and water as their minds, bodies, and spirits are tested to the breaking point. Like all of Thomas Thompson's books, this one is beautifully written. Don't start reading it until you have time to finish it - I couldn't put it down.
