I must be one of the few people who didn't think this was all that great. But then, I like a more straightforward story. Of course I saw the beautiful imagery, yes, but I wanted more action and less literary flights. Within 50 pages or so, it was obvious how all the disparate elements were connected and how it would connect by the end. Then I had to slog through pages and pages of their lives before the collapse, and I didn't think they were particularly interesting people. The prophet bit made no sense except to provide a connection for that one character - but, you know, every post-apoc story has to have a doomsday prophet so let's slot this character into that role. I think this is a post-apocalyptic book for people who normally wouldn't be caught dead reading that genre. I saw that HBO made a mini-series of it, curious what that was like.
