Q quite polished book but I was interested in his avoidance of the draft. He unashamedly explains how he bounced around, including acting like he would join the reserves, until he got lucky and the lottery came in, his number being 311.
He seems to have a vague idea that not having honorable military service could be a future problem politically, but it worked out well for him. There is a good argument to be made that it was a worthless cause, but most of us felt we had to measure up to our fathers' service in WWII. In 1992 I felt that this draft dodging would ruin his election chances and that the sterling service record of President Bush made him a certain winner, so I voted for Ross Perot.
