Ive held this play for several years. Now I wonder why I never bothered to read it before. It is a hilarious look at corruption in local government: not unlike what transpires in several Rhode Island cities and towns. And, shades of Shakespeare, the comedy begins with a case of mistaken identity. A government inspector is rumored to be paying the village a visitincognito, no less. Naturally all of the corrupt officials are concernedfinally. So a lowly government clerk is erringly thought to be the one, and is quickly and appropriately bribed. Ha! But he gets away before they discover the truth.
