Ral instructs Caryn, and her little sister, to go right home, that their is fighting in the area and it is not safe for them to be out. Ral will always feel guilty for not seeing the girls home, when he later discovers that other knights have raped the younger sister and beaten Caryn while they were on their way home. Ral and his men take the girls to a local convent and he doesn't see Caryn again for three years. When next they meet, Caryn has been taken prisoner by Ral's enemy, Stephen de Montreale. In order to save her Ral announces she is his betrothed. Neither wanted to marry, but Ral agreed to a name-only marriage until Caryn was ready to accept him. Caryn believes that it was Ral's men who attacked her and her sister years before, and despite her desire to exact revenge, she is unable to go through with it.
