Ronicky Doone is a surprise. I had slipped this small book into my reading list thinking that I hadn't read a western in a very long time. And guess what? I still haven't.

Yes, it has men on horseback. Yes, there is gunplay and gambling, and men defending their honor. But while it begins in the "wild west" we soon find ourselves in New York City, of all places. With automobiles and telephones and electric lights.

Max Brand spins a tale about men from the west as they go to confront a world very foreign to them; tracking a lost love and confronting a mobster. It reminds me of a Micky Spillane novel rather than the "McCloud" movies of Sunday Nights gone by.

If you are looking for an unusual twist, and don't mind imagining what life was like at the beginning of the 'last' turn of the Century, then request this novel as your next selection.
