In this poignant tale set against France and America in World War II, Danielle Steel creates the most heart-wrenching love story of her stellar career. For the millions who have made this phenomenal writer their favorite storyteller Ms. Steel has fashioned her strongest, most triumphant heroine. Liane Crockett de Villiers is a character readers will adore, envy, and identify with-a passionate, vulnerable woman caught by circumstances beyond her control in a net of conflicting passions and divided loyalties.

The story begins in the tense summer before the outbreak of World War II. Armand de Villers, Ambassador of France, has been called home from Washington. Crossing the ATlantic on France's supremely glamorous Normandie, he and his young American wife, Liane, meet Nick and Hillary Burnham. Nick owns one of the world's greatest steel empires;Hillary is a spoiled, senual Boston beauty for whom no marriage and no one man, could ever be enough. The spark between Nick and Liane is instantaneous, but it is not admitted by either of them. Not until a second fateful crossing, when each is forced to flee France without family or spouse, do Liane and Nick confront the power-and the hopelessness-of their passion.
On that dangerous voyage, suspended between two worlds, all is fair and beautiful, including their brief, bright love affair. But the crossing ends; Nick is sitll trapped in his charade of a marriage by his love for his son, Johnny and Liane is tied by love and loyalty to the husband she left behind in France. Liane and Nick walk away fro their love, each torn by a loss time cannot lessen. But neither of them knows the new heartbreak that lies ahead, the conflict between bravery and bitter betrayal each will face.
Moving between Paris, New York, and San Francisco, and vividly portraying the events of the century's most turbulent decade, Crossings carries Liane toward a final desperate choice-and the twist of fate that brings her face to face with the truth her heart has always known; Strong people cannot be defeated....
