It's hard to praise Jonathan Kellerman adequately without repeating oneself, especially when it comes to another great Alex Delaware/Milo Sturgis novel like "Monster". The by-play of psychologist and homicide cop is always intellectually stimulating at the same time it's gut-wrenching. This one finds the pair battling not only the perpetrators but other psychologists who staff a maximum-security facility for the criminally insane with grave indifference (and a little culpability), and similarly indifferent "policing" groups. The bodies pile up and the mystery thickens as we jump from one suspect to another, and in the end despite the careful wrap-up one is invariably caught in a familiar pair of feelings: 'I wish I hadn't read that' battles with 'I'm glad I read that'. And yes, I'll go looking for another in the series.
