This is only my third book of the series and obviously I haven't been reading them in order. It's a slight beauty and the beast story with some MMF / S&M action. The sex is explicit and it's more erotica than romance. There were some hilarious bits which I adored.
I liked both characters well enough until Katerina decided she knew better what was good for Calder than he did. For someone who was repeatedly experimented on and never knowing real freedom, I really thought that was the ultimate betrayal. Instead I wished she would have respected him and talked him into it instead of forcing him. After that I lost a lot of respect for Katerina.
The "climax" (not the same kind you are thinking of) of the story was a little bit cheesy. I definitely did some eye rolling and thought James should have done better.
Not my favorite of the series so far but it was okay.
