I had never read any of this series. I live in St. Paul, MN and the mother-daughter author duo is local. December 2016, the mom died and there was a story in our paper about it. I decided to start with the first book in the series and, if I liked it, would continue to read them in order. I read this book in about three days. The writing style reminds me of Janet Evanovich who also has written a series of mystery novels which has one central character surrounded by a bunch of rather "colorful" co-horts.
The premise of this book was intriguing so kept me reading. There's an interesting twist at the end.
This isn't great literature but it's not intended to be. It's colorful, breezy, and at times humorous (in its descriptions of people and/or their interactions with one another). I am planning on reading Book #2.
