A National Book Award Finalist--and yet I didn't really enjoy reading it. I DID like learning about ICE and the situations that can occur with deported parents and children left behind and adopted or put into foster care; that topic seemed very relevant to 2019. I wanted to call Deming 'Dreary Deming' in my mind as I read. I kept expecting him to commit suicide by the end of the book and was surprised that wasn't what happened because his choices and situations kept getting more depressing as he tried to figure out where he belonged and what kind of future he could have. I had huge empathy for the topic, but little interest and energy for the books characters per se. If that makes any sense.
