A Bride at Last by Melissa Jagears is the final book in the Unexpected Brides series. Silas Jonesey's mail-order bride disappeared after only a few months of marriage. After nearly ten years, Silas receives a letter from her asking for help. He travels to her home, intending to ask forgiveness for the rough beginning of their marriage and to try again as a family. Unfortunately, he arrives shortly after her death. Kate Dawson has been caring for her student, 9-year old Anthony Riverton, and his ailing mother Lucinda for the last couple of years. Kate plans to take Anthony as her own after Lucinda's death, but complications arise when two different men arrive, both claiming to be Anthony's father.

Silas was an alcoholic, although he had now been sober for around four years. Earlier in her life, Kate had experienced abuse from an alcoholic and was unwilling to trust another one. She had been engaged twice prior to meeting Silas, and he was leery of trusting someone again who wouldn't honor their commitments. Silas and Kate struggled to overcome these hard lessons and learn to trust again. The struggles Silas and Anthony faced as they forged a relationship were heart-wrenching. I enjoyed this story. The characters were believable, and they matured throughout the story. Although I read books one and two prior to reading this story, I do feel this could have been read as a stand-alone story. The characters from the other books only played a minor role in this story, and there weren't any dangling threads from past stories.
