A Victorian woman on the way to spinsterhood takes a once in a lifetime chance to have a romantic adventure. Later, learning that her tryst partner has died, she adopts his surname as her own in her photography business, little suspecting that the name will make her the target of murderous villains. She gets caught up in the doings of a mysterious Arcane Society, and learns that her supposedly dead 'husband' is very much alive.
