Summary:
Logan has recently moved to Xanadu. He's very unhappy about this move. His mother has left them and in an attempt to find out what happened, his father has quit his high profile job and moved them to this teeny tiny city in Wyoming. His new school has only 24 students in his grade. This means it's nearly impossible to make new friends, until he comes home one day and finds a griffin in his bed that talks to him. Oh my! Enter Zoe, the zookeeper, and Blue (the most popular boy in their little school). The two of them make an unlikely pair, but secrets hold them together. Zoe's family has been taking care of The Menagerie, a zoo of mythical creatures. Zoe is supposed to care for the griffin pups who have managed to escape. If that wasn't bad enough, the SuperNatural Protection Agency is coming in for an inspection at the end of the week. Zoe, Blue, and now Logan, have to find all of the griffin pups and get them back to the Menagerie before the SNPA gets in and possibly closes down (or worse) the Menagerie.
My thoughts:
Although predictable, this story is a lot of fun. Not only do we have the personalities of each of the main characters, but the personalities of all the animals are very enjoyable. The animals are definitely the absolute best part of this book. It is enjoyable to see each creature come to life with very distinct ways of being. Who wouldn't want a hell hound based upon how they are described within this book? This book is definitely appropriate for younger readers. I would say somewhere between 8-12 would be the targeted audience. This is the first in a series, so the ending will definitely keep you coming back for more. I was a little disappointed that some things were wrapped up very neatly and some things were left VERY wide open. It's hard to judge that in a first in the series book though, so I'll wait until the next one to see what I really think about those unanswered questions.
