Meredith, the miller's daughter, is locked into a room by the king and told to spin straw into gold. Rumpelstiltskin shows up and spins for her twice. Then the king tells her that if she spins the entire room into gold, he'll make her his queen. Rumpelstiltskin offers to spin, but only if he can have their firstborn. Meredith objects to both offers and decides to marry Rumpelstiltskin instead.
Years later, the king finds their daughter who teaches the king how to have a prosperous kingdom.
Why I recommend it: The twist on the original story is incredibly clever. The illustrations are detailed and with interesting details in the background.
